This is a solidly constructed table made in Vietnam from dense, heavy parawood not cheap particle board. I was very impressed with the milling, the clearly written assembly instructions. Packaging was also well done; lots of firm outer padding and interleaved foam sheets to protect the smooth surfaces. That being said, the drawer bottom and back casing were disappointingly only an 1/8" thick and overly flimsy due to the thinness. A stock of 3/16" would have greatly improved their rigidity and flatness.

Had that been the only drawback I would have still been quite happy with my purchase. However, since this comes unfinished, I planned to stain it. I read some reviews that said parawood has a tendency to stain unevenly, so I did a test on an inner part of the drawer which took the stain well, absorbing a bit more than you'd expect on solid oak. Satisfied, I went on to stain the remaining pieces. The top, drawer and the aprons all looked great, it wasn't until I got to the pre-assembled sides that I ran into trouble. Unseen by the naked eye, the glue used to hold the rails, stiles and panels together had been sloppily applied and was impregnated into the grain which prevented the stain from taking, leaving large, pale, unsightly, blotchy marks around the most of the junction points. This wouldn't have been so bad had they been confined to the internal surfaces, but they were all over, inside and out.

I could not have foreseen this since all the surfaces were finely sanded, showing no indication glue residue. I used a med-dark stain so the pale blotches were even more pronounced, ruining the entire piece. I was totally dismayed. The discoloration is so bad I can no longer use it as intended. I plan to donate it to Goodwill. I don't know whether I received just a bad unit or if this is standard quality. In any case, it's a shame that such a production oversight would ruin an otherwise very acceptable product. I have purchased many unfinished pieces of furniture in the past and never encountered this problem before.
