Product Description
Perfect for newlyweds or anyone setting up a first-time kitchen, this high-quality cutlery set provides three everyday essentials: an 8-inch chef's knife, a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, and a pair of kitchen shears. Use the chef's knife for chopping onions and potatoes for a soup, slicing mushrooms and peppers for a pizza, mincing garlic and fresh herbs, and much more. Its long sharp blade cuts through vegetables, meats, and fish smoothly and efficiently. The paring knife's straight edge offers close control for smaller jobs like decorating, peeling, slicing, mincing, and dicing a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more. Use the kitchen shears for clipping string, cutting cardboard, or even snipping herbs in the garden. As a bonus, the shears come apart for easy cleaning.
Made in Solingen Germany, "The Cutlery Capital of the World", the Wusthof Classic knives feature a special blend of high-carbon German stainless steel throughout the whole length of the knife for exceptional strength and balance. The knives also provide sharp, precisely tempered blades for safe, efficient use. Laser tested for accuracy, the unique, compound angle of the blade tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to create a sturdy, yet extremely sharp cutting surface. The blade also tapers from the bolster to the tip for added strength and flexibility. Another thoughtful detail includes the handles. Both knives provide a triple-riveted, ergonomic handle for a secure, comfortable grip. The pieces should be washed by hand with a mild cleanser and dried thoroughly. The three-piece set carries a limited lifetime warranty.

PEtec--Precision-Edge Technology
New Wusthof technology offers superior sharpness!
The latest cutting performance tests carried out by the FGW (Forschungsgemeinschaft Werkzeuge und Werkstoffe e.V., a German research association for tools and materials based in Remscheid) confirm that Wusthof forged knives offer the best quality when compared to other well-known, single-layer brands.
![PEtec](http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/B0001WN9SC-PEtec.jpg)
The extensive tests were carried out in accordance with DIN EN ISO 8442-5. Wusthof knives have a considerably higher ICP (Initial Cutting Performance) and maintain this performance for an extremely long time (TCC = Total Card Cut).
When compared with the winners in the "cook's knife" category awarded by German consumer organization "Stiftung Warentest" in its 1st edition of 2008, forged Wusthof knives featuring the new PEtec technology produce a result which is about 20% higher.
The Technology:
- Blades are measured by a laser before sharpening
- Computer programs calculate precise sharpening angle for each blade
- Knives are then sharpened on a whetstone using precision robots
- Knives are given a final polish using a special discp>
The Benefits:
- Extremely high initial cutting performance
- Exceptionally long edge retention / long service life of blade
- Optimum cutting edge along the entire length of the blade
- Unique, consistently high and reproducible quality
PEtec from Wusthof--superior sharpness for professional and home cooks!
How Wusthof Knives are Made
Wusthof knives are known for their outstanding sharpness. By honing and sharpening the knives yourself you can maintain this feeling for a lifetime of use (see "Honing and Sharpening" section below for detailed guidelines on how to do so).
![Evolution](http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/B0001WN9SC-evolution.jpg)
The evolution of a precision forged knife
Over 40 different manufacturing steps are needed to produce a forged Wusthof knife from one solid piece of steel.
Here you will find a detailed explanation of some of the most important production steps.
1. Sheet bar of high-carbon no-stain steel
2. Precision forged piece
3. Tempered to 58-degree Rockwell
4. Polished
5. Scales of handles and rivets
6. The Wusthof Cook's knife
Types of Blades
The Right Blade for Every Purpose
The edge is the business end of a knife. It is skillfully honed by hand and incredibly sharp. For different cutting tasks different blade shapes and edges are recommended.
The Differences:
Straight-edge blade: The straight edge allows a smooth and clean cut. When carving no fibres are torn out of the meat. This edge can be used for firm and soft food like meat, vegetables and fruit.
Serrated-edge blade: The wavy or serrated edge allows an easy cut through crusty food like a traditional roast and crispy bread.
Hollow-edge blade: When cutting an air pocket is created between the hollow edge and the slice. This prevents the food from sticking to the blade and allows for finer slices.
Cleaning & Storage
Proper care for long-lasting cooking enjoyment
If you value your tools, we recommend washing your knives with warm, soapy water after each use. Rinse carefully and dry with a towel.
![Wash](http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kitchen/detailpages/B0001WN9SC-wash.jpg)
For proper storage we recommend the following options:
- Knife blocks in a variety of shapes, colors and configurations. The handy knife block provides protection for your blades as well as a visual compliment to your kitchen decor.
- Magnet Bars in wood, synthetic material or aluminum. Two extra strong magnet segments provide a safe, easily visible and space-saving storage option.
- Cook's cases in rolls and briefcase styles. This is the ideal method for professionals to store and transport their tools safely.

Wusthof Classic 3-Piece Essentials Set with Chef's Knife, Parer, and Shears Review
As a classically trained chef, I know the value of a good quality knife. A well balanced sharp knife will cut with ease, while a dull knife is more dangerous and requires working harder. Knowing this, I purchased and use an extensive set of Henckels, one of Wsthof's major competitors. The W sthof Classic 3-piece essentials set consists of an 8" Chef's knife, a 3.5" paring knife, and kitchen shears. The knives are forged from high carbon stainless steel into a well balanced knife. The blade and tang are constructed from a single piece of steel, with synthetic wood handles attached to the tang on each side with rivets. The kitchen shears are similarly constructed with plastic handles, which easily snap apart for thorough cleaning. All components are considered dishwasher safe, however hand washing is recommended.
From visual inspection, the Wsthof and Henckel Chef's knives have a similar look. If it weren't for minor variations in the handle's curves, they would virtually look identical. The slightly more curvy handle on the Wsthof feels a bit more natural, but neither feels significantly better in the hand. The Henckel Chef knife is noticeably heavier, but but only weighs .2 ounces more. I use a Henckel 3" paring knife, so Wsthof's 3.5" knife isn't as comparable. However, they are both roughly the same length and have the same handle differences mentioned in the Chefs knife comparison.
The real differences are seen when comparing my kitchen shears. While the Henckel kitchen shears get the job done, the Wsthof shears are superior. That's not to say Henckel doesn't offer a comparable version. However my Henckel shears don't come apart and the jar/bottle opener tines are plastic. Although, my manly fingers fit into the handles far more comfortably in my Henckels, while my fingers feel cramped in the Wsthof shears.
Wsthof promotes their PEtec (Precision Edge technology) as being 20% sharper than all other comparable knives. I'm not the average knife user, and I know how to maintain my knives sharpness. I can't gauge how much sharper they are compared to the Henckels if at all, but there is no question the Wusthof knives are amazingly sharp.
Pricing between both the Wsthof Classic and Henckel Pro S knives are comparable. If I were trying to decide which brand to purchase, I'd feel comfortable purchasing either. If I were purchasing a starter set as a gift, I'd buy this Wsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set as Henckels doesn't currently have a comparable set.
The W sthof Classic 3-piece essentials set includes the most used kitchen cutlery tools every kitchen should have. W sthof's quality will ensure this set lasts for many years when properly maintained. If you're looking to start your own quality knife set or need a wedding/housewarming gift, the Wsthof Classic 3-piece essentials set is sure to please.
PROS:
Well balanced sharp knives
High quality construction
Dishwasher safe
Perfect starter set
CONS:
Shear handles too small for average man hands
